Report claims that former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed new concern over Nigeria’s 15-year conflict with Boko Haram, emphasizing that the insurgency has persisted much longer than the civil war.

Speaking at the Toyin Falola Interviews, he claimed that Nigeria’s security forces are still prepared for conventional combat rather than the quick-witted, surprising strategies used by rebels.

Recalling his trip to Maiduguri in 2011, Obasanjo said he learned that Boko Haram had a hierarchical structure and that early leaders, such as Mohammed Yusuf, were respected by some religious groups. Attempts at dialogue were hampered by unrealistic demands, like holding discussions outside of Africa.

He emphasized that Nigeria cannot successfully combat terrorism without specialized training, cutting-edge technology, and enhanced intelligence.

Obasanjo also emphasized lost chances, pointing out that the government never followed through on the short-term ceasefires he suggested, allowing the insurgency to fester for years.
