Usman Bugaje, a former federal lawmaker representing Jibia/Kaita Constituency in Katsina State, has reiterated that former President Olusegun Obasanjo actively pursued a third term in office.

Speaking on Monday, Bugaje claimed that Obasanjo made relentless efforts, day and night, to secure another term and that some of his associates issued threats and inflicted various forms of harm on those who opposed the move.

His comments came in response to Obasanjo’s recent statement suggesting that had he truly desired a third term, he would have achieved it.

Appearing on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Bugaje stated there is documented proof that money was distributed to legislators at the time as part of a strategy to push the third term agenda forward.

Bugaje said: “I can confirm to you that Obasanjo looked for that time, he did everything that he could within his power to look for a third term but he failed to do it.

“Now, the fact that he did not make a telephone call to make a particular call to anybody is not sufficient evidence that he did not look for that time, it’s just simply the style, it’s a matter of style.

“But all of us in the National Assembly at that time knew beyond any doubt that he worked day and night and there were many of us who were threatened by his own agents and there were people who suffered different types of harm.

“I recall Senator Victor Lar, then the leader of the Northern Caucus of the House of Representatives, had to hide in a number of places before we eventually were able to hold one critical gathering that actually helped us to galvanise the country in terms of standing up to Obasanjo’s third term, so I mean…

“There are so many evidences and these people who actually distributed the money and threatened us are still alive. Those who received the money are alive. Those who refused to receive them are alive. That is sufficient evidence.”
