Oluchi Oparah, the former National Treasurer of the Labour Party (LP), denied claims that Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, embezzled party funds while running for president in 2023.
According to Oparah, Peter Obi contributed money to the party and personally supported his campaign efforts.
She claimed that in addition to funding his own campaign, Obi was instrumental in bringing the party’s finances under control after joining.
“There was nothing of such. Mr. Obi never spent any money meant for the party,” Oparah said on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, when asked to react to the allegation by a chieftain of the LP, Abayomi Arabambi, that Obi spent party funds on his campaign.
“In fact, he lifted the party from zero level to where it is today,” she added.
She revealed that business was heavily indebted and had trouble paying its employees’ salaries prior to Obi joining the Labour Party.
She pointed out that Obi paid all of the money that was required of him and even used his own funds to support the party.
“Mr. Obi fulfilled every righteousness financially towards the Labour Party. There was never a time he asked for a dime from the party, unlike other political parties will do,” she stated.
In her explanation of the campaign finance system, she added that each candidate was allowed to run their own campaign account, apart from the party’s official funds.
She clarified that the Labour Party kept track of its finances for party operations as well.
“He spent a lot of money on the Labour Party. We have programmes that Mr. Obi solely financed by himself. Obi spent from his money because the Labour Party did not have a dime,” Oparah said during the interview.
She also urged Nigerians to focus on keeping the ruling party accountable rather than focusing on Peter Obi, denouncing what she described as the absence of accountability in the current APC-led government.
She also urged those who are accusing Obi of financial wrongdoing to provide documentation of the money they say they paid to the Labour Party.
“As far as I am concerned, Mr. Obi was the only person who showed interest in contesting on the platform of the Labour Party.
“So, anyone claiming whatsoever should come out to show us the particular account to which they paid whatever thing they say they paid to the Labour Party,” she maintained.
“Anyone that knows Mr. Obi very well knows that his act of charity is five and six, like the air he breathes,” Oparah said, praising Obi’s altruistic attitude and characterizing his charitable endeavors as a constant quality long before his tenure as a presidential contender.
