Comrade Tony Kabaka Adun, the youth leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Edo State chapter, has said that Governor Monday Okpebholo promised him that his hotel, which was destroyed by the Godwin Obaseki administration, will be rebuilt.
According to ZINGTIE, on February 5, 2020, the T. Latifah Hotel and Suites, a multimillion-naira hospitality establishment situated in GRA, Benin City’s Ugbor axis, was demolished.
Through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, the Edo State Government gave the APC youth leader a seven-day notice to vacate the hotel in October 2019 because it was purportedly constructed on property that belonged to a public elementary school.
ZINGTIE recalls that in October 2019, the Benin High Court’s Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa ordered the government led by Godwin Obaseki and its operatives to refrain from destroying the APC chieftain’s hotel.
In the case that Kabaka filed before him (B/151/05/2019), Justice Okungbowa, who is currently the Chief Judge of the State, imposed restrictions on the previous government.
However, the state APC youth leader revealed that Okpebholo had pledged to reconstruct the hotel for him five years after it was demolished.
On June 12, Kabaka startled the crowd at the State Government House during Democracy Day celebrations by announcing in public that the governor and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, had pledged to construct the hotel for him.
Tony Kabaka explained the promise as a Democracy Day present from the governor in a widely shared video on his own Facebook page and on other social media sites.
“Your Excellency I want to thank you for your promise. I want to tell you all what makes my Democracy Day today.
“What makes my Democracy Day today is that His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and Hon. Dennis Idahosa have promised Kabaka that they will rebuild my hotel this morning.
“May God bless you all as you join me to celebrate my past lost hotel,” he said.
The youth leader for the APC added that Governor Okpebholo hasn’t destroyed any homes or properties with no criminal histories since taking office.
He claimed that Okpebholo, who currently holds such position, is not abusing it to victimize the populace, unlike Obaseki, the previous governor, did everything unfairly because he did.
“He has not shown us he has power. He has not shown us that he is against the law,” Kabaka added.
But on the film, Okpebholo, seated at the top table, was shown trembling and bending his head, seemingly in response to the hotel owner’s hidden promise that was suddenly made public.
The governor was reminded by social media influencer Albert Osazee, who also posted the video on social media, that the hotel was constructed on state government property by the state APC youth leader during the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole administration.
He said the governor ought to realize that Tony Kabaka had blocked an existing route in order to construct his hotel.
“After building the hotel, he discovered that there was no swimming pool in it, and that was why he blocked the road to construct the swimming pool.
“So let us see how Governor Monday Okpebholo will block the road again that had since been reopened by the former Governor, Godwin Obaseki, to rebuild the hotel.
“I really pity Governor Okpebholo because what was supposed to be private and secret discussions and promises, the APC youth leader has publicly exposed them.
“Edo people, let us be vigilant and see how the governor will use the taxpayers’ money to rebuild a hotel for the APC youth leader on government land and a public road,” he stated.
Tony Kabaka also lamented during the Democracy Day event that the youths have not been adequately involved since Okpebholo became the state’s governor.
Despite the fact that the government is new, having only been in power for seven months, he asked the governor to figure out how to establish and give a channel for the empowerment of young people.
“I want to use this opportunity like Oliver Twist to ask for more. I am a state leader of APC, for God’s sake. I beg our governor, Monday Okpebholo, and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, to please listen to our youths. Since September 21, 2024, we, the youths, have not been properly engaged.
“But I know that this government just started. We will give you time. My Excellency, I want to beg you, sir, that if there is a way you can carve out something and say this is for the youths, I will be very happy and our youths will pilot it without fear or favour,” he said.
Kabaka pointed out that a crucial aspect of government is including the youth.
