Mr. Agboola Ajayi, the PDP’s candidate for governor of Ondo State in the November 16, 2024, election, has formally dropped his appeal against Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Supreme Court.

Ajayi had earlier petitioned the Election Petition Tribunal to have the results of the poll, in which he received 117,845 votes versus Aiyedatiwa’s 366,781, revoked.

However, the petition was denied, and later appeals at the Tribunal and the Court of Appeal were likewise unsuccessful in overturning the governor’s triumph.

Unfazed, Ajayi went on to seek remedy at the Supreme Court.

However, the former deputy governor declared his intention to drop the case in a letter dated September 16, 2025, sent to the Chief Registrar of the highest court. On Wednesday, the letter was released to reporters.

Ajayi did not provide a specific explanation for his decision to drop the appeal, but he did clarify that it was the result of lengthy discussions with his associates, legal team, family, and party stakeholders, all of whom approved with the ruling.

Part of the letter from Mr. Ajayi Alfred Agboola and Anor V. Independent National Electoral Commission & 3 ORS, with the heading RE: SC/CV/757/2025, says:

“As the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, I have engaged in thoughtful discussions with my family, party members, associates, and legal advisors. After careful deliberation, we have reached a consensus that the appeal should be withdrawn, and I’m signing this letter to do so.

“Having served as the former Deputy Governor and as a representative of my constituents at the national level, my foremost commitment is to the principles of good governance and the promotion of peaceful coexistence in Ondo State and across Nigeria.

“In this spirit, I extend my heartfelt wishes to His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa as he leads our state, and I remain dedicated to contributing positively to state and national development.”
