OPay Digital Services Limited has partnered with Olabisi Onabanjo University to support 20 indigent students with a N300,000 annual scholarship each. The fintech company’s Chief Public Affairs Officer, Justin Zhang, stated that the initiative aims to help young Nigerians achieve their educational goals.

Zhang explained that after 13 years of working in Nigeria, he observed that many promising students struggle to fund their education. “I have met many young ones who are quite smart but are having financial difficulties with their education,” he said. “Some of these young ones, after spending a year at the university, may have to go and work for one or two years to get some money to pay for their school fees.”

The scholarship program, which began last year with the University of Ibadan and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, will now extend to 18 additional universities, including Olabisi Onabanjo University. For each university, 20 students will receive N300,000 annually, totaling N120 million per year for the project.

Zhang added that OPay has also donated educational materials to secondary schools and plans to empower 100 women with vocational training and support to establish their trades. “We pledge to continue partnering with relevant organizations to ensure Nigerian youth thrive and build a solid future,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, praised OPay for investing in young Nigerians’ education, noting that the gesture aligns with the university’s objectives. Agboola urged OPay to support the university’s entrepreneurial drive, particularly in research fairs and boot camps, to help students scale up their innovations.

The Students’ Union leader, Muizz Olatunji, thanked OPay for easing the burden on students who struggle to pay school fees and encouraged the company to support the university’s entrepreneurial initiatives for economic growth.

Olatunji said, “On behalf of the entire student body of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, we sincerely thank OPay for this great support because it will help to ease the burden of some of our students who find it difficult to pay their school fees.

“We equally hope that OPay will also support the university’s entrepreneurial drive for the students because that is the way to achieve economic growth and prosperity for our dear nation.
