Organised Labour pushes for N154,000 minimum wage over rising hardship

The Nigerian Labour Congress has advocated for a new minimum wage of N154,000, pointing to the worsening economic hardship and declining purchasing power faced by Nigerian workers.

A letter from the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), a branch of the Nigerian Labour Congress, contained the demand.

The letter, which was signed by Olowoyo Gbenga and Benjamin Anthony, emphasized the “urgent necessity for an upward review of salaries and allowances” in the public service.

The council stated that the existing wage structure does not accurately represent economic realities, as inflation, food prices, and transport costs are increasingly exerting pressure on workers.

They noted that the suggested minimum wage of N154,000 is intended to restore a decent standard of living and urged the Federal Government to begin immediate negotiations.

As worries mount regarding Nigeria’s cost-of-living crisis—where numerous families find it difficult to satisfy fundamental requirements—the demand arises.
