Bisi Akande, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), revealed that former President Muhammadu Buhari never opposed Bola Tinubu’s emergence as president.
Akande stated that Buhari didn’t encourage his former Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, to contest the presidency against Tinubu.
Interestingly, Osinbajo, who is a known political protégé of Tinubu, had contested for the APC’s presidential ticket against Tinubu in 2022 but lost.
Before becoming Vice President, Osinbajo was nominated for the role by Tinubu.
During Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State governor, Osinbajo worked with him as Attorney General, despite hailing from Ogun State.
A seeming political feud erupted between Osinbajo and Tinubu during the APC’s presidential primaries, following Osinbajo’s decision to contest.
However, Akande clarified that Buhari never encouraged Osinbajo to run against Tinubu.
In an interview on Edmund Obilo’s Podcast, State Affairs, Akande disclosed that he recommended Osinbajo as Vice Presidential candidate to Buhari.
When asked if Buhari opposed Tinubu’s candidacy, Akande responded with a clear “no”.
According to Akande: “He didn’t tell me so. I asked him many questions, including whether he instigated Osinbajo to contest against Tinubu.
“He said no and explained that, in his culture, when your mentor is interested in a position, you don’t contest with him.”
