The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a crucial step ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial election. The party’s various groups have been directed to suspend all internal communications regarding the candidacy.
This decision was reached during a stakeholders’ meeting of the Osun West Senatorial District APC, held in Iwo on Friday. The gathering brought together key party stakeholders to discuss the way forward.
A unanimous agreement was reached, acknowledging former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s privilege to be considered first for the party’s gubernatorial ticket.
Under the chairmanship of Akin Omolaoye, the meeting expressed solid confidence in the party’s leadership at both national and state levels. The APC reaffirmed its commitment to presenting a strong candidate for the 2026 governorship election.
According to Omolaoye, Oyetola will retain his position as the party’s preferred candidate unless he decides to step down.
The move to suspend internal communications comes amidst rising tensions within party support groups. The leadership has intervened to prevent potential divisions.
Party unity has been deemed paramount, superseding individual ambitions. To this end, the APC has instructed its groups to refrain from issuing statements or communiqués regarding the 2026 candidacy.
Omolaoye has appealed to the party leadership to consider zoning the ticket to Osun West if Oyetola declines to run. This move would ensure fairness and balance within the party.
He emphasized that Osun West remains a critical stronghold for the APC, with immense potential to regain power in the state if given the opportunity.
“We do not have an anointed candidate, but we are speaking with one voice—if Oyetola is not contesting, it is the turn of Osun West to fly the party’s flag.
“We have more than a hundred qualified candidates in this district, and our priority is to produce the best candidate when the opportunity arises.
“We appeal to external forces to desist from making statements and taking actions that could divide the party. We are one big family in the APC, and we are committed to remaining united,” Omolaoye added.
The meeting was attended by notable politicians, including former Deputy Governor Benedict Alabi, former Speakers Mojeed Alabi and Adejare Bello, and Senator Mudashir Hussein.
