The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to direct an inquiry into what it said was a state government conspiracy to use police officer impersonators to target its members.
On Sunday in Osogbo, the Osun APC made these claims in a statement that was signed by Kola Olabisi, the party’s director of media and information.
The party said that the state administration, headed by Governor Ademola Adeleke, intended to use people dressed as police officers to sabotage market activities and hurt APC-led local government officials.
The party asserted that the state administration had engaged in a number of strategies to thwart the elected local government executives’ return to office since the Court of Appeal in Akure reinstated them on February 10, 2025.
“The latest in the government’s puerile attempt is to mobilise Niger Delta militants and hoodlums from the South-West, dress them in police uniforms, and send them to markets to cause chaos,” the statement read.
APC further stated that the purported scheme aimed to unjustly accuse the party for any violence or disturbance that might result from the conduct of the impostors.
Olabisi also said: “It is unfortunate that Governor Adeleke has refused to accept that the APC chairmen and councillors, reinstated by the court, are legally empowered to administer local government affairs, including market supervision.”
The party said that in order to alleviate the hardships endured by traders under the old system, the reinstalled officials had immediately declared a halt to the collection of taxes and levies in the markets.
Osun APC asserted that local governments are legally required to oversee market management and cautioned that the state government lacked the constitutional authority to meddle in this area.
“It is the Court of Appeal judgement of 10th February that restored the rightful authority of these officials. They are not acting illegally by performing duties clearly within their mandate,” it said.
The party accused Governor Adeleke of employing illegal methods instead of going to the Supreme Court to seek redress if he disagreed with the appellate decision.
“We invite the Inspector-General of Police and the Osun Commissioner of Police to caution Governor Adeleke and his agents. No part of the Constitution allows a governor to take over market administration,” it stated.
The party urged law enforcement to stop the state’s political tensions from getting worse and declared that it would fight any attempt to stop its reinstated council representatives from performing their constitutional duties.
Mohammed Umar Abba, the state commissioner of police, was recently ordered by Governor Adeleke to immediately stop the activities of the chairmen of local governments and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This comes after they were charged by Governor Adeleke of engaging in unlawful taxes and council document fabrication.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokeswoman, Olawale Rasheed, the governor denounced the unlawful levying of fees on market operators and characterized the purported actions as a danger to law and order throughout local government regions.
In response to allegations of falsifying council documents and using fabricated materials to obtain questionable profits, Governor Adeleke urged the police to invite the impacted individuals for interrogation.
