Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, the Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, along with two other doctors, has been suspended by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel due to findings of medical negligence in the case of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.
ZINGTIE remembers that, after a short illness, one of the twin sons of well-known writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her spouse, Ivara Esege, tragically passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
Adichie recounted the heartbreaking incident and, in a statement on Saturday, January 10, 2026, alleged that her son’s death involved medical negligence.
She clarified that after her son initially developed symptoms that were thought to be a common cold, he was taken to Euracare Hospital in Lagos for an MRI scan and the placement of a central line. This condition later “turned into a very serious infection.”
Nkanu was sedated during the procedure, but after receiving propofol, he was not adequately monitored. This lack of proper monitoring led to complications such as loss of responsiveness, seizures, and cardiac arrest.
Adichie mentioned, “He would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th,” at which location he had undergone medical treatments.
To investigate the incident, the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel was formed.
As a result of the panel’s investigation, Majekodunmi, the medical director of Euracare, along with Dr. Titus Ogundare, the hospital’s anesthesiologist, and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, the Chief Medical Officer at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, were suspended.
The trio will continue to be prohibited from practicing medicine in Nigeria until the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal has made a determination on their cases.
Moreover, the panel identified a prima facie case of professional misconduct for 10 additional doctors, among them Dr. Adeseye Akinsete, Dr. Chidinma Ohagwu, Dr. Anthony Ajeh, Dr. Amarachi Bayo, Dr. Nkechi Peji, Dr. Olaoye Oludare, Dr. Agaja Oyinkansola, Dr. Patricia Akintan, Dr. Babatunde Bamgboye, and Dr. Raji Faidat.
Eight additional doctors were found not to have committed any violations.
After reviewing complaints against all 21 doctors, examining their counter-affidavits, and considering their oral depositions on oath, the panel reached these decisions.
The investigation was concluded at the panel’s 25th session in Abuja on February 17 and 18, 2026.
