The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Professor Lar Manko, has cautioned Nigerian parents and guardians against paying money to influence admission processes for their children. She described the practice as “illegal and exploitative,” exposing families to fraudsters and undermining the integrity of the admission process.

According to Professor Manko, over 200 fake admissions were recently uncovered within the institution, with many linked to individuals collecting money under false pretenses. She stated, “There is no need to pay money. Nigerian parents should stop paying money to get admission.”

The VC urged parents and guardians to ensure their children process admissions through official Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) platforms and university portals. She added, “If you didn’t go through JAMB or our system, you’re not in. Don’t let anyone deceive you.

Professor Manko highlighted the university’s efforts to restore order and institutional integrity, including the successful conduct of digital Students’ Union Government elections and entrepreneurial training for students. She said, “We have introduced what we call the Career Student Empowerment Centre; we have energised students and introduced measures that will make their experience on campus far more enriching.”

The VC also emphasised the need for alternative revenue sources, stating, “The government cannot fund education entirely and efficiently. We must begin to explore alternative sources of revenue and enhance the services we offer as a university.”

Despite challenges and the need for significant investment in ICT infrastructure to support digital learning initiatives.

The university has signed new international collaborations with institutions from several countries and introduced new language programmes. Professor Manko concluded, “We are rebuilding a global university, one where students are equipped, staff are motivated, and diversity is respected.”
