PDP: Damagum defends ties to Wike, denies incompetence

Umar Damagum, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) interim national chairman, has denied claims of ineptitude and cooperation with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In response to growing criticism within the party, he was defending his ties with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In an interview with BBC Hausa, Damagun responded to the charges, refuting assertions that he is an APC puppet and restating his allegiance to the PDP.

“May God be the judge between me and whoever slandered me, and may God judge us, if I am working for the APC,” he said, about claims that he had a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in England.

The interim National Chairman of the PDP emphasized his history of loyalty to the party, saying that he had never strayed since joining it in 1999.

According to him, those who don’t like him will have to figure out how to achieve what they want by either praising or criticizing him.

In response to complaints about his ties with Wike, a well-known member of the APC government, Damagum acknowledged their affiliation but denied any misconduct.

“For all those who accuse me of having links with the Minister of FCT, I know him or have had links with him, and many of them have had links with him. My only fault here is that I did not allow them to do what they wanted with him,” he said.

Although he denied any abuse of individuals who departed, the PDP chairman expressed sadness over certain party members defecting to the APC, calling it a loss.

Damagum acknowledged that disputes are unavoidable in any political party while discussing internal PDP issues, but he insisted that the PDP is still together.
