Regarding an alleged zonal congress of the PDP in the Southeast, the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, and Mr. James Ugwu, the Southeast Zonal Secretary of the PDP, have been warned to refrain from taking any action that would be considered contempt of court.

In separate letters to INEC and Mr. Ugwu, Barr. Mike Nwankwo’s attorney, who had previously secured a court order prohibiting the PDP from holding the zonal congress in the Southeast zone, alerted both parties to an existing court order originating from suit no. FCT/HC/CV/325/2025 that prohibits the congress’s conduct.

INEC was informed in the letters signed by lead counsel Kalu Kalu Agu that the electoral umpire had previously appeared in the case and has since stated that it would follow the court’s directive.

Following the court’s directive, INEC withdrew its employees from the Southeast zonal congress, which was originally set for Saturday, February 22, 2025.

The letter informed INEC that, in accordance with the PDP constitution, only the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) was authorized to hold Zonal congresses, and that the NWC had not set a new date for the congresses since the disastrous February 22, 2025 congress.

Rumors have been circulating on social media that the PDP had set the date of the Southeast zonal congress for February 26, 2025, according to WhatsApp messages sent by Mr. Ali Odefa, the defeated National Vice Chairman of the PDP in the Southeast, through Mr. James Ugwu, the Zonal Secretary.

While cautioning the PDP zonal secretary and INEC to avoid contempt of court, Mr. Kalu also urged the public, particularly PDP members in the Southeast, to disregard any such messages because the PDP’s NWC, which is legally empowered to hold the zonal congress, has not set a date for the meeting.
