The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has a number of youth organizations that support Senator Samuel Anyanwu as its national secretary.
This came when Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye, a former PDP Youth Leader, continued to argue about who should be the party’s National Secretary.
According to ZINGTIE, following a recent meeting in Abuja, the PDP Board of Trustees, or BOT, had endorsed Ude-Okoye. However, Anyanwu reacted negatively to the news, stating that the BOT’s decision was not credible.
Eighty percent of the BOT members who made the decision, he claimed, had already served out their terms.
“I’m a member of the BoT, I was not invited to the meeting, and neither was the National Chairman. This says a lot. In any case, the tenure of about 80 percent of those at the meeting expired in October last year.
“They are also aware that this matter is in court. Even Chairman Wabara, who was taken to court, sent a representative. Their advice is just that — advice, and it cannot be taken seriously,” Anyanwu said.
The conflict over the National Secretary post has made the PDP’s situation worse, but speaking to reporters in Abuja on Tuesday, the PDP youth groups, acting under the auspices of PDP Youth Frontiers Network, emphasised that Anyanwu remains the legitimate National Secretary.
They issued a warning, saying that any attempt to have him removed and Ude-Okoye replaced would not be tolerated.
By recommending that the National Working Committee, or NWC, swear in Ude-Okoye as the National Secretary, the PDP Governors’ Forum and the Board of Trustees have gone too far, according to Henry Owolabi, national coordinator of the PDP Youth Frontiers Network.
According to them, the judgment is at conflict with the party’s constitution and ignores the fact that Anyanwu was chosen at a convention.
The organization further pointed out that Anyanwu has appealed the verdict at the Supreme Court, and therefore, the status quo should be preserved pending the determination of the substantive case.
They cautioned against the influence of those who are desperate for power, saying that the Governors’ Forum and the BoT are “illegal, deliberately mischievous, and uncomplimentary” to the party.
If the warning is disregarded, the group reportedly vowed to organize its members to block court buildings and file civil lawsuits.
“We consider it an imperative and dire need of the hour that, as a party we must begin by building consensus and form once more a united, formidable and strong party, striving to preserve the PDP as a veritable platform for good governance in Nigeria and not continue in the path of self-interest, self-distraught, myopic divisiveness and pristine bickering which has not helped us but has become viable and fertile ground for the opposition to hatch inroads and poach into us destroying our very fabrics.
“We, therefore, join our voices and affirm unequivocal, unflinching and unwavering support and loyalty of our organization and that of all party supporters to the ideals of the party and by extension to the office of the National Secretary.
“Senator Anyanwu remains the National Secretary and the attempt to remove him and replace him with a judiciary-imposed secretary, without any Congress or legitimate procedural ratification of any organ of the party is hereby totally rejected.
“We warn all detractors and perpetrators and indeed the Judiciary to steer clear of the internal workings of our great party and henceforth refrain from issuing illegal, baseless, porous, judgments that lack legal foundation and are immoral.
“We are poised to mobilize all our members and teeming supporters to block all judicial premises and ensure civil actions that will lead to compliance with this warning if it is flaunted,” Owolabi said.
