The leadership crisis that had long troubled the Ogugu Ntu-egbenesee community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State was finally resolved on Saturday, with the election of a new executive team.
In an atmosphere marked by peace and order, and under official supervision, the people chose Engr. Ben Uche to serve as President General, tasked with steering the community’s affairs in the years to come.
The voting exercise, held at the field of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Community School in Amanabo, was attended by delegates from various branches of the union worldwide. Officials from the Enugu State Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Matters were also present to observe proceedings.
Announcing the outcome, the Election Committee Chairman, Mr. Donatus Anioke, revealed that Engr. Ben Udeh of Uhuokpo Village secured 153 votes, defeating Mr. Livinus Aneke of Ugwuoma Village, who polled just 2 votes.
Anioke noted that the election strictly adhered to the union’s constitutional guidelines.
Speaking on behalf of the Enugu State Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Matters, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, the Director for Town Union, Mrs. Queendaline Nonyerem Odike, applauded the caretaker committee for conducting a transparent and peaceful vote. She encouraged the newly elected team to carry out their duties within the framework of the law.
Dr. Augustine Okolie, a respected figure in the community and former Director of the National Orientation Agency in Enugu State, praised the residents for uniting in the spirit of progress. He said the successful election showed what could be achieved when collective interest is prioritized, and emphasized that the outcome reflected the will of the people.
Gidim Dominic Ogbonna, another prominent member of the community and a key figure in organizing the poll, expressed satisfaction with the calm environment during the vote. He said the event had set a democratic benchmark for the Ogugu Ntu-egbenesee community and would likely encourage broader civic participation going forward.
Caretaker committee chairman Mr. Camilus C. Chukwueze expressed great happiness over the seamless conduct of the election. He said the development had brought an end to the leadership struggles that had plagued the community since the previous year, and expressed full confidence in the capabilities of the new executives.
He urged the incoming leadership to collaborate closely with the traditional authorities and all tiers of government to promote the welfare of the community. He also thanked the Enugu State Government, under the leadership of Barr. Peter Ndubisi Mbah, for its ongoing support.
