Peter Obi, a presidential hopeful for the 2027 general elections, has responded to the arrest of former presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore.
Sowore was taken into custody on Thursday after he voluntarily responded to an invitation at the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja.
On Friday morning, Obi expressed on X his call for Sowore’s immediate release, questioning why the police would detain a citizen who willingly complied with their request.
Obi, expressing deep concern over the actions of Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies, highlighted that no clear or credible charges had been publicly presented against Sowore.
He noted that the police’s conduct raised serious doubts about the reasons and legitimacy behind the detention.
“To detain a citizen who came of his own accord, without the public disclosure of clear, lawful charges, is not only a miscarriage of justice but an abuse of state power,” Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023 said.
The former governor of Anambra State cautioned that failure to release the activist would further erode public confidence in the country’s policing institutions.
