Mr. Peter Obi, who was the Labour Party’s candidate in the presidential election, has condemned the Federal Government for what he termed “fiscal recklessness” regarding the handling of Nigeria’s national budgets.
On Monday, Obi made a statement on his official X account questioning which budget Nigeria is currently using, as the Senate is expected to approve the 2026 national budget on March 17.
He pointed out that Nigeria has been executing budget items from various fiscal years at the same time since 2023, characterizing this practice as irregular and detrimental to the management of public finances.
Obi stated that President Bola Tinubu inherited a 2023 budget of ₦21.83 trillion and subsequently introduced a supplementary budget of ₦2.17 trillion, which he claimed prioritized benefits for public office holders in the face of widespread economic hardship.
He added that the trend persisted with the endorsement of N35.06 trillion for 2024 and N54.99 trillion for 2025, resulting in total appropriations exceeding N114 trillion under the current administration in under three years.
Obi voiced worry that even with the enormous expenditures, budget execution has not reached 50 percent, resulting in what he termed a public finance credibility crisis.
Additionally, he criticized the government for its choice to repeal and re-enact the 2024 and 2025 budgets with extended timelines, arguing that Nigerians were not given details about the revised budgets or their capital projects.
The ex-governor of Anambra State accused the Federal Government of being opaque, claiming that treasury reports were absent from the OpenTreasury.gov.ng platform and that 2025 had no budget implementation report.
Obi cautioned that no country could thrive with such fiscal practices and urged the government to reestablish discipline in budget management.
“This lack of transparency is not accidental; it reflects a deliberate pattern of undermining public scrutiny and debate.
“The Federal Government has stopped publishing treasury reports on the OpenTreasury.gov.ng portal, dismantling a vital transparency framework inherited from the previous administration.
“In 2025, no budget implementation report was released, regardless of how poor the performance was! No nation can operate with such recklessness and succeed,” Obi said.
