The Zenith Labour Party’s (ZLP) leadership has warned that the ongoing political tensions in the states of Lagos, Osun, and Rivers could get out of hand and has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act quickly to protect Nigeria’s democracy.

ZLP National Chairman Chief Dan Nwanyanwu revealed in a statement issued on Sunday, a copy of which was provided to Taraba State’s Daily Post, that the party had called an emergency meeting to discuss what he called “anti-democratic developments” in the states in question.

“We at ZLP sincerely bemoan the ugly and anti-democracy music booming in Rivers, Osun, and Lagos states. We call on President Tinubu to halt this disturbing trend, especially since it is allegedly coming from his political associates,” Nwanyanwu stated.

Using comparisons to the violent upheaval of the Southwest’s “Wild Wild West” era and the emergence of militant activity in the oil-rich Niger Delta, the party also warned against a recurrence of previous political crises.

Nwanyanwu questioned the legitimacy of 27 state lawmakers who left their party without a formal national separation, focusing on the ongoing crisis in Rivers State.

He emphasized that these lawmakers had first attempted to retract their sworn statements attesting to their defection.

“Even an unborn child can attest to the defection. There are public announcements, video recordings, and even a reception organized by their new party,” he said.

The ZLP warned that unbridled political privilege is a major threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability and denounced the withholding of funding and other political practices that exacerbated the problem.

Recalling the nation’s pro-democracy battles in the 1990s, Nwanyanwu reminded President Tinubu of their common past in the struggle for democratic governance, pointing out that many of the political figures of today were not present at the time.

The party emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy is still under jeopardy and called on Tinubu to act quickly. It issued a warning that impeachment of Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara under dubious circumstances may spark unrest and perhaps cause economic disruptions, including threats to oil production.

“This is how the Wild Wild West crisis started,” ZLP warned.

“Imagine the unintended consequences, including disruptions to oil flow, if this situation is not handled with care.”
