In Papiri, Agwarra Local Government Area, Niger State, 315 persons were kidnapped from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools. Pope Leo XIV has called for their quick release.
The mass kidnapping, which involved students, teachers, priests, and other members of the Catholic community, caused the Pontiff great pain in a speech on Sunday.
“I received with profound sorrow the news of the abduction of priests, faithful, and schoolchildren. I make a heartfelt plea for the swift and unconditional release of all those being held,” Pope Leo XIV said.
Armed men allegedly launched a well-planned invasion of the private Catholic school early on Friday morning.
Local sources claim that the attackers entered the building by force after arriving in huge numbers on more than 60 motorcycles with the assistance of a van.
The school’s gatekeeper was shot and left critically injured during the assault.
Although the precise number of kidnapped students has not yet been confirmed, an Agwarra resident corroborated the occurrence.
“It happened between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.. The number of students taken is still unclear,” the source said.
Concerns regarding the scope of the attack and the victims’ safety were further raised when a second community source said that multiple teachers were also taken into custody during the raid.
