A married woman named Oriyomi has described how she was imprisoned in Osun State’s Ilesa Medium Correctional Center for a crime that she believes was committed by a man he met on Facebook.
According to Oriyomi, she was arrested by the police approximately six months ago for allegedly committing fraud against a state senior magistrate by a man she met in a Facebook chat group.
The woman, a caterer, claimed that they began dating after the male courted her.
She clarified that the man’s request for her to purchase a SIM card and register it using her NIN, which she did, was the beginning of her problems.
She is unaware that the man is a well-known con artist who connives to defraud wealthy men.
She admitted to the police that they had tracked her after they had caught her since the SIM card used to perpetrate the crime had her image and other personal information on it.
“I met the guy on a dating group on Facebook and we started talking about love. One day, he asked me to assist him in buying a SIM card and that I should use my NIN to register it. I did that and later he came to my place to collect it. I did it because we are already dating.
“I never knew he had been using the SIM card to carry out frauds. I gave him the registered SIM the next day. After six months, the police came to my workplace saying I have been using the SIM card to defraud people. I am a caterer. It was later I was informed at the police station that he has been using the SIM to defraud people.
“The police arrested me because I registered with my NIN and it showed my details and photo. I was detained immediately because the man escaped and I didn’t know any details on how he could be arrested. I was arraigned at a Magistrate’s Court and the court ordered that I should be remanded in prison while trial continued.
“It was after I found myself in prison that I discovered I had been pregnant. To the glory of God, the Medium Correctional Centre Stakeholders saw my condition and my pregnancy and they went to Magistrate Ijiyode, the man defrauded and begged him on my behalf, he took pity on me and dropped the charge. When the case came up, the court struck it out.
“I spent six months in prison. The case was struck out because of my pregnancy and for the fact that the complainant has forgiven me. I didn’t know that the man I met on Facebook is a notorious fraudster who uses people’s NIN and BVN to dupe others,” she narrated.
She described the appalling prison cell circumstances, stating, “there is nothing like freedom. The prison is not a place someone should be. Bedbugs, mosquitos are enough to make the place a living hell.”
ZINGTIE learned that a few weeks after being released from prison, the married woman gave birth to a child.
She claimed that in light of the occurrence, her spouse is being placated to accept her.
Nigerians, particularly young women, have been advised to exercise caution when using social media and to be mindful of the sensitive information and access they provide to strangers.
Many people on dating sites, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are harmful, according to Sunday Adeoti, chairman of the Ilesa Medium Correctional Stakeholders, and “our people, especially our young ladies should be careful with what they do with them.”
“Know that if you give them access to your sensitive applications and details and whatever they do with them, if there is any negative issue, you will be in trouble for it,” the cleric warned.
