In a statement issued Tuesday evening, the Premier League insisted that David Brooks was not sent off for dragging Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella to the ground because it was not violent behavior.
Following a report of a possible aggressive conduct offence, in which Brooks seemed to use his arm to push Cucurella down as Chelsea broke away for a counterattack, referee Rob Jones looked at the pitchside monitor.
To the annoyance of Chelsea players and fans at Stamford Bridge, Jones chose to issue a yellow card after multiple views of the incident, even though it appeared Brooks was about to lose it.
“VAR recommended an on-field review for a possible red card to Brooks for violent conduct.
“Upon review, the referee deemed that the challenge on Cucurella was a reckless action and not violent conduct – and issued a yellow card to Brooks,” a statement read.
After Chelsea took the lead thanks to Cole Palmer, Bournemouth scored twice through Antoine Semenyo and Justin Kluivert.
Reece James, however, struck a late free kick to help the Blues earn a point at home as their chances of winning the championship started to wane.
