The 2023 Labour Party vice presidential candidate, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, has been under fire from the presidency, which claims he is consumed by resentment and preoccupation over Vice President Kashim Shettima’s political career and growing prominence.

Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications (Office of the Vice President), said in a statement released on Friday that Datti’s recent comments were envious, desperate, and unjustified.

This came after Datti asked why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hasn’t fired Shettima during a visit on Arise News.

The remarks, according to the Presidency, were not only unfounded but also a manifestation of Datti’s personal political annoyances.

“Unlike the picture of a desperado that Datti attempted to paint of VP Shettima, this Vice President is a perfect story of democratic credentials—untainted and never involved in election rigging. In fact, he has never lost an election,” Nkwocha’s statement read.

He commended Shettima’s performance, pointing out that the vice president has been President Tinubu’s dependable and successful second-in-command and is still a trusted partner in government.

“His loyalty to President Tinubu is unwavering and total,” the statement added, “a trait that the President deeply values.”

Remembering how the former senator was expelled from the National Assembly by a court decision in 2011 for suspected electoral fraud in favor of the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Nkwocha also questioned Datti’s moral legitimacy to criticize the vice president.

“Those who rigged elections and were sent packing by the courts should not attempt to moralise. Datti’s bitterness stems from personal political failure.

“While Shettima delivered Borno for his party, Datti couldn’t even secure a second-place finish for the Labour Party in Kaduna.”
