A comprehensive probe into comments made by Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, regarding an alleged wiretap on the National Security Adviser’s phone line has been requested by the presidency.
El-Rufai claimed that he and a few others overheard Mr. Ribadu’s phone calls following the tapping of the NSA’s phone by someone.
He upheld the legality of the phone interception, admitting that it is technically illegal but asserting, “The government does it all the time. They listen to our calls without a court order. But someone tapped his phone and told us that he gave the order.”
Bayo Onanuga, who serves as Presidential Spokesperson, expressed worries on Friday shortly after El-Rufai’s interview on Arise TV regarding the claim’s potential impact on national security.
“El-Rufai has confessed to wire-tapping Nigeria’s NSA on TV. Does it mean that he and his collaborators have wire-tapping facilities?” Onanuga queried.
He mentioned that the problem should not be overlooked, emphasizing the necessity of accountability.
“This should be thoroughly investigated and punishment meted out. El-Rufai is not too big to face the wrath of the law,” the presidential spokesperson stated.
