President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the establishment of two new federal universities in Osun and Ekiti States. This approval came after he signed the bills supporting their creation on Thursday in Abuja.

The two newly established institutions are the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State. According to Bayo Onanuga, the president’s spokesman, these specialized universities aim to meet the educational needs of Nigerians while fostering research, innovation, and economic growth.

President Tinubu emphasized, “These institutions will serve as training centers for professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, enhancing Nigeria’s global competitiveness.”

Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, also commented on the development, saying, “The universities will ensure youth gain quality education in science and agriculture. They will equip students to drive development.” He added that the institutions would bridge gaps in science, technology, and innovation, promoting environmental sustainability, agricultural research, and national food security.

Furthermore, the president approved the Federal Government’s takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, converting it into a federal institution. This development brings the total number of federal universities in Nigeria to 63, with 63 state universities and 149 private universities.

It’s worth noting that this is not the president’s first move in the education sector. Earlier, on February 3, 2025, President Tinubu had also approved the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni town, Tai, Rivers State.
