O’tega Ogra, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Digital Communications, Engagement, and Strategy, has criticized Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, over his recent endorsement of Argentina’s economic policies.

Obi, on August 11, attributed the widespread hunger and poverty in Nigeria to what he described as poor leadership lacking both capability and empathy.

The former governor of Anambra State also emphasized that the economic hardship experienced by Nigerians is not merely a statistic but a daily reality for many citizens.

He further drew parallels between the economic situation in Nigeria and that of Argentina, highlighting Argentina’s recent progress.

Obi noted that Argentina had implemented a series of reforms including eliminating fuel and electricity subsidies, devaluing its currency, and significantly cutting public spending which, according to him, led to notable reductions in both inflation and poverty within two years. He suggested that Nigeria could adopt a similar approach.

In a response issued Tuesday, Ogra criticized Obi’s comparison of President Javier Milei’s Argentina to Nigeria under President Tinubu. He argued that such comparisons overlook critical economic differences and expose contradictions in Obi’s economic stance.

“Before Argentina’s President Javier Milei began his reforms, inflation was already at around 114.2% then rose to about 289% four months into his reforms with prices more than tripling in 12 months,” Ogra said.
