Peter Obi, who contested as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has emphasized the urgent need to place Nigeria’s security at the forefront of national priorities.
In a statement shared on his verified X account on Saturday, Obi reacted to remarks made by Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, who admitted he is aware of the hideouts of known bandit leaders but is unable to take action due to his lack of authority over security forces.
The former governor of Anambra State described the situation as a clear indication of the structural deficiencies plaguing the country’s security system.
He stressed the need for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security setup, advocating for a more efficient, decentralized, and responsive framework.
“What kind of country are we running where a federating unit lacks the coordination and support of the centre in the most critical role of governance the protection of life and property? When the Chief Security Officer of a state is reduced to a mere spectator, citizens are left at the mercy of criminals,” he stated.
Obi urged the Federal Government to empower state governors by providing them with the necessary tools and authority to ensure the safety and protection of lives within their jurisdictions.
