Protest: FCT Commissioner of Police seize journalist Oyekunle’s phone [VIDEO]

One of the journalists attacked on the first day of the nationwide protest in Abuja, Jide Oyekunle, has accused CP Benedict Igwe, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, of stealing his cell phone.

Reporters reporting the ongoing protests across the country said that on Thursday in Abuja, police attacked them.

The moment that FCT Police Command agents picked up Jide Oyekunle was caught on camera in a social media sensation.

The International Press Centre (IPC) denounced the development, claiming that some of the impacted journalists suffered injuries, were taken into custody, or had their equipment damaged.

The FCT Police Command’s public relations officer, SP Josephine Adeh, informed ZINGTIE that the claim was untrue.

However, Oyekunle—a photojournalist for Daily Independent and the chairman of the FCT Correspondents’ Chapel—spoke after his release in a video that is currently trending, claiming that the CP had ordered his detention and taken his phone away.

He said “The Commissioner of Police Benedict Igwe, right in my very presence, ordered my arrest and personally collected my phone from me and went away with it. As I’m speaking to you now he is still with my phone.”
