Students of the College of Agriculture and Renewable Natural Resources at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) took to the streets on Monday to protest the lack of essential facilities for practical learning. Despite paying N50,000 each for farm equipment and materials, the students claimed they were not receiving adequate support for their studies.

According to one student, “At 400-level, we’re supposed to be farming. This started in November 2024, but after clearing weeds and cutting grass for less than a week, we were sent home. Now, we’ve resumed, but all we do is plant vegetables.”

Another student expressed frustration over the lack of facilities, saying, “They’ve asked us to pay an additional N10,000 for IT, but there’s no equipment or support for our practicals. There are no poultry farms, piggeries, or livestock facilities. These are crucial for our studies, yet they are lying fallow at the Ogbomoso campus.”

The students also decried the poor living conditions at the Iseyin campus. “You need to see our way of living here,” one student said. “There’s no hospital. If you see the number of students that fainted during exams, it’s terrible. We lack proper facilities for learning.”

The students criticized the university’s decision to relocate some students to the Iseyin campus, citing high transport and accommodation costs.

“We fought against the move, but no one listened,” one student said. “Even when lecturers come, they rush through seven chapters in one day. It doesn’t make sense.”

The protesters emphasized that they were not receiving value for their money. “We’re paying money but not getting proper lectures or care,” one student said. “They’re not taking our farm year seriously. We’re just wasting time and money.”

The students have given the university administration until Friday to address their demands for better facilities, threatening to resume protests if their demands are not met.
