The results of the most recent Kaduna State by-elections, according to human rights activist Mahdi Shehu, demonstrate that former governor Nasir El-Rufai no longer has the political clout that many of his supporters believe.
He called El-Rufai a political weight and cautioned opposition parties that it would be a blatant suicide attempt to depend on him for election success.
This was disclosed by Shehu on Tuesday in a post on X.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), which received just 146 of the 17,452 votes cast in the Basawa State Constituency election, was also disparaged by the analyst for its poor performance.
He claims that a score like that indicates the party’s financial ruin.
“Any party that scored 146 votes out of 17,452 votes casted is a party in destitution, an outcast and orphaned no matter the crowd it mobilized during the electioneering campaign,” he wrote.
He went on to say that El-Rufai received a clear message from the ADC and its supporters’ rejection in the Basawa, Zaria Kewaye, and Chikun/Kajuru constituencies.
“Zaria people and voters have not forgotten, neither have their schooling children, nor their pensioners, teachers and health workers,” Shehu wrote.
“The 146 votes scored by ADC means he needs to go into soul searching, repent, ask for forgiveness and seek the face of God.”
The opposition parties PDP, SDP, LP, and ADC were also cautioned by Shehu not to rely on El-Rufai to increase their prospects in upcoming elections.
“It also sends a clear message to ADC/SDP/PDP/LP, that while El- RUFAI may be vocal, relying on him for their success in future elections is a clear SUICIDE mission and a CASINO with a blind player. A mental giant could as well turn out to be a political destitute with no value on election day.”
Shehu stated that parties need to carefully select its strategists, even if he acknowledged that the PDP had what he called impressive performances in the by-elections.
“If ADC, SDP, PDP and LP wish to make any impact in the coming elections, they must rely on actors with minimal toxic political backlog, not those who have inflicted deep political lacerations on people,” he advised.
He concluded with a proverb: “Every day for the thief, one day for the owners. It is an initial harvest time for El-Rufai.”
There were 17,452 votes cast in the Basawa constituency, with 10,996 going to the APC, 5,499 to the PDP, 811 to the SDP, and 146 to the ADC.
