Members of the House of Representatives have voiced serious worries over the disturbing return of Boko Haram assaults and the theft of military equipment valued in the trillions of naira, cautioning that failure by the government to respond could lead to massive public outrage and erosion of faith in democratic governance.
The concerns were raised during discussions on a motion presented by Rep. Ahmed Satomi (APC, Borno), which addressed the recent fire outbreak at the armoury of the 127 Battalion located in Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri, as well as the rising frequency of attacks on military installations in Borno and Yobe States.
While speaking on the issue, Rep. Yusuf Gagdi (APC, Plateau) highlighted that insurgents have, over time, made away with tanks and armaments worth trillions of naira from military locations, in spite of the financial allocations approved by the National Assembly aimed at reinforcing national security structures.
“The pictures I saw from the Giwa Barracks attack frightened me,” Gagdi said. “How can we guarantee the safety of Nigerian citizens when the platforms meant to protect them are in the hands of the enemy? If care is not taken, Nigerians will soon begin to fight us the way they fight criminals and Boko Haram.”
He warned that persistent negligence by military leadership and the indifference of key government officials risked pushing the country toward anarchy. “We must go beyond passing motions. We must summon these agencies to explain their failures publicly,” he added.
In his lead debate, Satomi described the fire incident and continued attacks on military installations as a grave threat to national security and public safety. “These attacks are not only undermining our military strength but leaving civilian communities dangerously exposed,” he said.
Other lawmakers shared similarly grim reports. Rep. Ahmed Jaha (APC, Borno) revealed that Boko Haram now uses sophisticated, weaponised drones to strike both military and civilian targets.
“In Chibok, 14 farmers were butchered. In Izge, a captain and a senior officer were killed. Boko Haram is now more advanced than the Nigerian military in terms of equipment,” he said.
Rep. Zainab Gimba (APC, Borno) shared details of a tragic assault on a multinational joint task force base in Kala Balge, where more than 20 troops were killed. She stressed that violence against communities in her area has worsened, putting both residents and military facilities at greater risk.
Rep. Lawan Shettima Ali (APC, Yobe) suggested that the insurgents’ increasing access to advanced technology might be linked to external sources.
“The firepower Boko Haram wields now suggests external support. We must investigate this,” he urged.
Lawmakers also called on President Bola Tinubu to hold military commanders and security chiefs accountable for operational failures and to take immediate steps to restore public confidence.
