The spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi, has stated that President Bola Tinubu consulted with the National Assembly prior to declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State.

As a reminder, the president declared a state of emergency in Rivers on Tuesday due to the ongoing political crisis in the state. Tinubu also suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the members of the state assembly, and nominated retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the state administrator.

In his statement, Rotimi explained that the National Assembly was duly consulted before the president made his decision. He stated that Tinubu met with key National Assembly leaders, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Senate Leader Michael Bamidele, House Leader Julius Ihonvbere, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. The meeting also included the Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Director-General of the State Security Service Adeola Ajayi, and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency Mohammed Mohammed.

Rotimi mentioned that during the meeting, the president fully briefed everyone on his intentions, and all attendees expressed unanimous support for the decision.

He also noted that the president’s letter, informing the House of Representatives about the state of emergency and seeking approval in line with Section 305 of the Constitution, has been transmitted to the Green Chamber. The letter will be read during Wednesday’s plenary for further legislative action.
