Rerun election: Why we zoned senatorial seat to Onicha LGA – Ebonyi APC

The Ebonyi South senatorial seat was allotted to Onicha Local Government Area on Tuesday by the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC, in the state.

Zingtie remembers that on Monday, Austin Umahi—the younger brother of David Umahi, the Minister of Works and the former governor of Ebonyi State—expressed interest in running in the February rerun election.

The Minister of Works, INEC REC, and SSA to the President are from Ohaozara LGA, one of the five local government areas that comprise the Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone.

The deputy governor and a member of the House of Representatives are from Afikpo North. Ivo LGA yields a member of the House of Representatives, while Edda LGA delivers the State Party Chairman. There are no well-known politicians or public officials in Onicha LGA.

Based on these premises, the APC leadership in Ebonyi State chose to zone the party’s senatorial seat to Onicha LGA after David Umahi’s resignation and appointment as minister of works.

In a statement signed and provided to reporters in Abakaliki, the party’s leadership, led by Stanley Okoro Emegha, stated that the senate seat was zoned to Onicha Local Government Area to guarantee justice, equity, and fairness for the local population.

The statement reads in part: “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), pursuant to the relevant provisions of our laws, and the President of the Senate declared the seat of Sen. David Nweze Umahi vacant, owing to his resignation from the 10th Senate for an appointment as the current Minister of Works.

“The position resigned by Sen. David Nweze Umahi belongs to the All Progressives Congress, Ebonyi South Senatorial District.

“It is in the interest of justice, equity, and fairness, as envisaged by the leader of our great party, that the vacant seat of Ebonyi South Senatorial District be zoned to Onicha LGA of Ebonyi State.”
