The political landscape of Kano State has been profoundly altered by the death of Galadiman Kano, Abbas Sanusi, who brought together political adversaries who had previously been at odds.

After a protracted illness, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, the most senior councillor and longest-serving member of the Kano Emirate Council, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at the age of 92.

The deceased’s son, Abdullahi Abbas, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano, and Senator Barau Jibrin, the deputy president of the Senate, were among those who attended the funeral.

Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, was also present. He was the first to bring a lawsuit against the removal of Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and the dissolution of the Kano Emirate; the case is still pending. Another prominent person in attendance was APC leader Musa Iliyasu Kwankwaso.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, his deputy Aminu Abdussalam, former Governor and NNPP leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, whose home the funeral prayers were held, were among the major personalities on the opposing side.

These two rival groups have previously been embroiled in bitter political and customary conflicts in Kano, particularly following the rift between former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his former deputy, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who is now the National Chairman of the APC.

Abdullahi Abbas, the chairman of the Kano APC, thanked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for attending in a brief remark, “Indeed, I have been shown great generosity by the Kano State government, His Excellency the Governor, his Deputy, and other government officials. I sincerely appreciate it. May Allah preserve our bond.”

Speaking to ZINGTIE, a few Kano locals expressed astonishment at the amicable reconciliation between these acrimonious political enemies.

“I was shocked to see Abdullahi Abbas and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf conversing respectfully. I hope this unity lasts for the progress of Kano State,” said a young man, Ibrahim Sa’id, who attended the funeral.

However, some young people hold the two former Kano governors responsible for the state’s political problems.

“I would love to see reconciliation and unity between Kwankwaso and Ganduje. These two individuals are the main problem of Kano politics, and as long as they do not unite, we will never progress,” said a man who simply identified himself as Usman.

Similarly, an NNPP supporter who requested anonymity stated, “I never expected these people to come together again for any reason. Even though I doubt this unity will last, it serves as a lesson for supporters who take political rivalries too seriously.”

In a widely shared social media video that ZINGTIE was able to view, Sarkin Dawaki Babba, Aminu Babba, and Agundi were shown clutching Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s hand while reciting prayers and blessings.

Because it temporarily brought long-standing political rivals together, political observers view Galadiman Kano’s death, Abbas Sanusi, as a turning point in Kano’s political career.
