A medical doctor killed an EFCC officer when they arrived in the middle of the night like armed robbers during a period of insecurity in the state. The man reacted in self-defence, most likely believing they were robbers.
The man involved is a medical doctor with no ties to illegal activities. The pump-action gun he used was reportedly licensed. Normally, before the EFCC operates in any location, they are supposed to contact the local police. Unfortunately, this technique was not followed during their operation in Awka that night.
The doctor was told that the appropriate security services were unaware of the EFCC’s presence when he contacted to enquire. Thinking that kidnappers had confronted him, when they broke into his apartment at midnight, he fired in self-defence. Unfortunately, two EFCC officers suffered injuries during the operation. He dropped the weapon instantly when he realised they were from the EFCC.
Concerns have been raised, however, by the EFCC’s efforts in Anambra. They first tried to conduct a raid in a specific location, but the police, who were not aware of their operation, stopped them.
The EFCC claims that they changed their plans and carried out the raid at a smaller location because of a lack of people. Using the kinds of automobiles parked outside as clues as to which apartments to check, they broke into the estate and targeted apartments.
This begs the question: given the state’s persistent insecurity and a manpower shortage, how did EFCC agents from the Enugu zonal office travel to Anambra without alerting the local police?
Although it is very regrettable that we lost a commission employee, this necessitates a new approach. I don’t buy into EFCC entering an apartment like criminals.
The resorted to media with story of Yahoo lads shooting EFCC operatives since they can’t justify mode of their operation in Awka that night.
EFCC should do investigation before invitation or even arrest.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ought to adapt its tactics to take intelligence into account!
