Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has stated that he had broken ways politically with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike stated that he will personally back a candidate he trusts to succeed Fubara, emphasizing that he would not repeat the mistakes made in the 2023 race.
The former Rivers State governor made the statements during a weekend rally to supporters in the state’s Ahoada Local Government Area.
According to him, earlier agreements with the governor were allegedly broken, making further political cooperation difficult.
“We will not make the mistake we made in 2023,” Wike said, adding that no one will dictate political decisions to him in Rivers State.
He also denied assertions that recent campaign slogans and demonstrations would guarantee an electoral ticket for any candidate.
ZINGTIE notes that Governor Fubara recently switched to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Wike, on the other hand, underlined that his open support for President Bola Tinubu does not imply his endorsement of Fubara’s re-election campaign.
He restated his support for Tinubu, stating that the president deserved a second term and highlighting Tinubu’s benevolence towards Rivers State, including his appointment as FCT minister.
Despite this, Wike insisted that political decisions in Rivers State will be driven only by trust and interests.
“So, if you like, shout on your mandate 50 times a day. It will not give you an automatic ticket. If you like, bring everybody, shout on your mandate that is not an automatic ticket.
“Politics is about interest,” he said, adding that he would support a candidate he can rely on and “sleep with his eyes closed.”
