The speakership dispute roiling the Lagos State House of Assembly is taking on a dangerously monstrous size that, if not promptly tamed, will be the mother of all state legislative crises in Nigeria, according to Fouad Oki, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“If you see what happened today, you will begin to look at Rivers State, the mayhem that is also consuming Osun State, you look at what is also happening in Kano, you put all of these together, and it will be like a child’s play to (that of) Lagos,” Oki said on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Monday.

The Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, was allegedly prevented from entering the hallowed chamber until hours later by armed security guards from the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force who were stationed there earlier on Monday. After lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in her, she broke down in tears as she finally presided over the plenary.

After Mudashiru Obasa was removed as the Assembly’s speaker and the election of Meranda, the state legislature has been locked in a leadership battle for weeks.

Obasa has argued that his dismissal was unlawful and has challenged the procedure in court, despite the fact that more than 36 pro-Meranda legislators in the 40-member Assembly vowed allegiance to the first female speaker.

The APC leader called Monday’s chaos at the state assembly a humiliating display and a blow to democracy.

“Today is a sad day for me and indeed for all lovers of democracy in Nigeria,” he said.

Oki said “enough of begging and enough of appeasement”, saying that he and other comrades who were in the trenches during the fight for democracy would defend what they believed in.

“If there are those who do not have a sense of history, those who may be either be benefactors of Hon Mudashiru Obasa or supporting him to cause a breach of the peace in Lagos, we will again put our lives on the line to defend democracy,” he said.
