Under the auspices of Civic Room for Rule of Law, a coalition of civil society organizations has endorsed the demand that Ibok-ete Ibas, the only administrator of Rivers State, be removed immediately.

According to ZINGTIE, Ibas’ purported abuses, especially the dismissal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s appointees, have continued to incite resentment throughout the nation.

Citing a violation of constitutional procedure, Femi Falana, a human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria urged the Nigerian government to remove Ibas right away on Thursday.

Falana was especially responding to the Sole Administrator’s appointments and dismissals of some government personnel.

The lawyer also cited the Federal Government Gazette, which was earlier published by President Tinubu and contained the regulations controlling the Sole Administrator’s activities.

Ibas can only function in accordance with “regulations that may, from time to time be issued” by President Tinubu, the paper claims.

In a statement released on Tuesday by its president, Maxwell Egboh, the coalition asserted that Ibas violated presidential directives and disrespected the rule of law, citing recent actions by the sole administrator.

Concerns over the consequences of the sole administrator’s removal of government officials without a presidential mandate were voiced by the coalition.

“The Sole Administrator’s arbitrary decisions have created an atmosphere of uncertainty and tension, which can only be resolved by his immediate removal.

“We urge President Tinubu to take swift and decisive action to address this situation and uphold the law”, the statement added.

The coalition urged the green chamber to look into the sole administrator’s activities in detail and praised the House of Representatives’ Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers State for calling him.
