Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), asserts that he is powerless to prevent the Rivers State House of Assembly from fulfilling its constitutional obligations.

This came after he once more backed the Assembly in its conflict with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Martin-Amaewhule’s House and Fubara have exchanged accusations and rebuttals on the state’s 2025 budget presentation.

The Supreme Court’s decision to acknowledge the lawmakers as valid members of the Rivers State Assembly coincided with their impasse.

The House reportedly requested that Fubara re-present the state’s 2025 budget after he had already done so to the group of members led by Victor Oko-Jumbo.

Wike has supported the Rivers State House of Assembly after the dispute between the legislature and the governor, who claimed that the members were impeding his efforts to re-present the budget.

“Let me tell you, I’m not going to stop the Assembly from performing their constitutional duties. The Assembly should be allowed to perform their constitutional role,” Wike said on Saturday during a Thanksgiving Service held in Abalama, Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

“The Assembly people should do their work. Whatever they deem necessary and fit, that is constitutional, they should do. I’m not going to stop anybody from carrying out their functions. I will not do that,” the minister said.

According to Wike, Fubara stole allowances and other benefits that members of the Rivers State House of Assembly had earned.

Additionally, the state’s immediate former governor asserted that Fubara was misled into recognizing a group of lawmakers and was falsely promised that nothing would happen.
