Governor Siminalayi Fubara of River State has been warned by Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, not to make “unfounded allegations” against him.

According to him, the police would not tolerate threats to kill people and set the state on fire over a local government election.

The statement follows Fubara’s declaration that Egbetokun will face consequences if the state’s law and order collapses.

On Friday morning, the governor had stepped in to diffuse a situation at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission’s (RSIEC) office.

He stopped what appeared to be an attempt by the police to take materials intended for the next municipal elections.

According to ZINGTIE, the news comes amid a political standoff that is still going on in Rivers State regarding this Saturday’s local government election.

But according to Egbetokun, it was startling to witness Governor Fubara attack the RSIEC office, according to a statement made by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Nigeria Police Force’s public relations officer.

Part of the statement read: “The Nigeria Police Force has noted with concern the recent statements made by the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, in which several unfounded allegations were levelled against the Office of the Inspector-General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force. In light of these claims, it has become necessary to set the record straight.

“The Nigeria Police takes exception to the unwarranted outburst of the Governor and particularly the weighty accusations which he falsely levied against the Inspector-General of Police and the entire Nigeria Police Force and advise caution and decency in the pursuit of individual political goals.
