In the midst of the controversies surrounding Rivers State’s local government election on August 30, the sociopolitical group PDP Vanguard has urged citizens to cast ballots.
In a statement released following its Friday meeting, the group called on the public to come out in large numbers “to cast their votes for any candidate of their choice.”
Edwin Woko, the group’s coordinator, signed the statement, which reiterated the group’s support for reestablishing democratic governance throughout the state’s 23 local government councils.
Woko said that the ongoing political unrest in Rivers “almost exposed the economic and social activities to collapse,” acknowledging the setback.
Additionally, the group urged political players to put the state’s interests ahead of their own and put an end to hostilities.
It also called for support for measures aimed at fostering peace and ending the conflict.
The statement emphasized how its members are not considered for political appointments or nominations to elective offices.
Therefore, the group urged Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to step in and make sure its members are involved in decision-making when needed.
Many have criticized the local government elections, which were originally set for August 9 but were moved to August 30. Some claim that retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the state’s sole administrator, is not authorized by the constitution to hold the elections.
