Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, has expressed his backing for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasizing the legitimacy of his leadership.
It’s important to note that Kaja Kallas serves as the Prime Minister of Estonia, not as a representative of the EU.
Zelensky, who won his position through transparent and fair elections, has faced criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who labeled him a “dictator” for not conducting elections.
However, EU representatives have clarified that Ukrainian law forbids presidential elections while martial law is in place, which has been the case since the Russian invasion.
They also pointed out that several national constitutions include provisions for exceptions to hold elections during times of war.
In reaction to Trump’s comments, Kaja Kallas, as Estonia’s Prime Minister, underscored Russia’s own dubious election practices, highlighting that the country hasn’t held legitimate elections in over two decades.
