Yesterday, nine employees of the Akamkpa Quarry Limited, which is situated in the Obung community in the Akamkpa LGA of Cross River State, turned violent and caused damage to corporate property.

Some employees, including Indian officials from the company, were taken hostage when the fired employees, who were allegedly armed, also took their ire out on a local chief’s home.

It took a while to get the names of the fired employees.

Witnesses reported that the irate employees, who said they were wrongfully fired, had blocked the routes that led into and out of the company.

“They were also damaging company vehicles in anger, holding workers hostage, which included some Indian nationals. They burnt down the house of their chief.”

When the Akamkpa Divisional Police Officer realized that things had gotten out of control, he called CP Rashid Afegbua, the State Commissioner of Police.

Irene Ugbo, Afegbua sent tactical teams to the scene, according to a PPRO statement.

“As they arrived, the hostile youths hurled stones at the police patrol vehicles, causing damage.

“They fired locally made pistol pellets at them, which caused some of the police personnel to sustain minor injuries.

“The police responded by engaging the youths, arresting some suspects, and recovering one long automatic locally made rifle, one locally made pistol, one machete, and a number of expended cartridges.”

In order to prevent potential tragedies, Afegbua advised the young people to refrain from trying to interfere with the police while they are carrying out their legal responsibilities.

While the investigation is ongoing, he also counseled community leaders to always warn their young people about the repercussions of such behavior.
