The Federal Government, through the Uyo Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has cautioned that collecting fuel from overturned tankers poses extreme danger and is essentially a “suicide mission.”
This warning was delivered by Ms. Aisueni Mmandu, Head of the Uyo Operations Office, during a public sensitization event on tanker-related accidents and fire outbreaks held on Monday in Ikom, Cross River State.
The Uyo branch of NEMA is responsible for overseeing emergency response activities in both Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.
Mmandu strongly advised the public to avoid approaching tankers that have been involved in accidents, particularly those carrying flammable substances, due to the high risk of fire and potential fatalities.
She emphasized that fuel should never be collected from a fallen tanker, as the situation could easily lead to a deadly explosion.
“In recent times, we have had tanker explosions in Niger, Jigawa, Delta, Enugu, Lagos and Cross River claiming hundreds of lives and property worth millions,” she said.
According to her, such accidents, although preventable, typically stem from a combination of reckless driving, vehicle overloading, inadequate maintenance, poor road conditions, and limited public knowledge.
Mmandu called on government institutions, transportation unions, and community heads to implement measures aimed at minimizing the frequency and impact of tanker accidents and related fires.
