El-Rufai’s defection due to his anti-democratic past is rejected by SDP youths.
Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection has been rejected by a coalition of young people within the Social Democratic Party (SDP), who claim he has a history of anti-democratic inclinations and a disdain for inclusivity.
The group’s commander, Comrade Abdulsamad Bello, made this announcement in a statement on Friday.
El-Rufai, he said, was morally and physically unfit to be a member of the party.
He claimed that El-Rufai’s authoritarianism, repression of alternative voices, and impunity during his time as governor were reasons why his presence may destabilize the SDP.
Additionally, the coalition denounced the party’s leadership for permitting what it described as a “clandestine deal” that made El-Rufai’s accession possible.
El-Rufai’s supporters’ protests at the SDP national offices in Abuja, where they demanded the resignation of Olu Agunloye, the party’s national secretary, were also cited by the group as proof of his intention to seize control of the organization.
Following his split with the APC and President Bola Tinubu, the youth organization accused El-Rufai of utilizing the SDP as a platform for his political aspirations.
They labeled his previous critiques of opposition leaders as disingenuous and regarded his defection as a deliberate attempt to stay relevant.
Recall that El-Rufai just left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) after speaking with opposition leaders and critiquing the party.
