The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Mahdi Shehu, a political analyst and activist from Kaduna, due to a contentious viral video.
Shehu was arrested over the weekend after it was said that she had uploaded old video that showed the Nigerian government had plans to build a French military facility in the country’s northwest.
Shehu removed the video, but it had already gone viral online and sparked worries about national security.
Zagazola Makama, a security analyst and counter-insurgency specialist in the Lake Chad region, was informed by sources that Shehu is currently in DSS custody in Kaduna and could soon be the subject of court proceedings. According to reports, authorities have given instructions for his arraignment while making sure his rights are upheld while he is being held.
Mustapha Abubakar, Shehu’s attorney, was called by SaharaReporters, and he said he got to know about the arrest from Shehu’s family.
Abubakar added that as he is not in Kaduna state at the moment, he was unable to elaborate on the problem.
On the subject, the DSS has not yet issued an official statement.
Shehu was taken into custody by Abuja police in February.
According to sources who spoke to SaharaReporters, Shehu was taken into custody after a petition was filed on behalf of the former minister and his family by the law office of Abubakar Malami (SAN), the former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.
SaharaReporters was informed by a source close to Shehu that the businessman and whistleblower had been arrested and was still being held by the police.
“I was told that he was arrested pursuant to a petition written by the chambers of the former AGF, Abubakar Malami on behalf of Malami and his family. The letter came with the letterhead of A.A. Malami & Co. Law Office and the petition is on behalf of Malami and his family.
“He was arrested by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit at the Force Headquarters IN Abuja,” the source said.
Later, Abubakar said that Malami and some members of Muhammadu Buhari’s immediate previous government may have tried to silence him for calling for accountability from them, which may have contributed to his client’s arrest and police custody. (SaharaReporters)
