The Imam of Nghar village in Plateau State’s Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Abubakar Abdullahi, who notably provided refuge to 262 Christians during intercommunal strife, has gone away.

The cleric passed away on Thursday night at the Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos, according to his son Saleh Abubakar, who confirmed his passing to Daily Trust on Friday.

Saleh claims that his father “died ten days after he was admitted” to the hospital.

“He was initially diagnosed with a heart problem. He’d go for check-ups and return. His health hadn’t been stable since the heart disease diagnosis.”

At the age of ninety, Imam Abubakar passed away. Twelve sons and seven daughters make up his 19 surviving offspring.

Imam Abubakar saved 262 Christians from potential death in June 2018 after violent, religiously motivated communal conflicts that ravaged ten villages in Barkin Ladi by providing them with shelter in his mosque and home until the violence calmed.

He received numerous honors for his bravery, including the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award from the US Department of State.

Following the Juma’at prayers, the late cleric will be buried in Nghar village on Friday (today).
