An act of jungle justice committed against a poor woman who was mistaken for a kidnapper in the state capital of Ilorin has been denounced by the Kwara State Police Command.

Around nine in the morning on Thursday, the event took place at the well-known Ipata market.

According to a statement released Thursday in Ilorin by SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer,

“Information received that a woman, suspected to be destitute, was sighted wandering around the community; misinformed members of the public wrongly suspected her to be a kidnapper.

“In the ensuing circumstances, an angry mob descended on the woman, inflicting serious bodily harm.

‎”Upon swift mobilization, Police patrol teams raced to the scene, rescued the victim and rushed her to the General Hospital, Ilorin, for urgent medical attention.

“Regrettably, the attending doctor confirmed her dead as a result of injuries sustained. Her remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary, while discreet investigation has commenced.”

The Command denounced the practice of jungle justice, claiming that it seriously jeopardizes innocent lives and violates the rule of law.

It also issued a warning that mob action will not alleviate security issues; on the contrary, it will increase insecurity and jeopardize public safety.

Adekimi Ojo, the Commissioner of Police, asked the public to maintain composure, follow the law, and always report suspicious individuals or activities to the closest police station.

He urged the state’s citizens to oppose all types of mob violence and work with the police to enforce justice, law, and order.
