A syndicate that helps sell Nigerians unearned university degrees—many of which are subsequently illegally cleared by government agency, such as the Ministry of Education—was discovered by Audu’s undercover investigation.

The joint House Committees on University, Polytechnic, Interior, Foreign Affairs, and Youth Development are presently looking into the incident, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

The House’s instruction was delivered by Committee Chairman Rep. Abubakar Fulata, who also urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security organizations, including as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, to guarantee Audu’s protection for the ensuing ten years.

“We are grateful to Audu for his courage. We urge the Minister of the Interior to ensure that the Civil Defence provides the required support alongside the police,” Fulata said.

Audu described in his testimony before the committee how he obtained a university degree from the Benin Republic without attending lectures and got the Ministry of Education approve it for a ₦40,000 price.

In response to the disclosures, Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo pushed for the establishment of an automated single-point contact system in order to centralize educational verification and eradicate this kind of fraud.

“Such an error did not occur under this administration. However, a unified, automated portal is essential to curb this menace,” Noting this, Tunji-Ojo also expressed regret to Nigerians for the oversights.

Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the NYSC Director-General, also testified before the committee, stating that the corps had started employing biometric verification to verify certificates that potential corps members presented.

“We deeply regret the anomaly and are collaborating with relevant agencies.

“Our verification system is now stronger, and we have initiated reforms to prevent any recurrence,” Nafiu assured.

In order to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s public service and education sectors, the House committee restated its commitment to completing an exhaustive investigation and implementing changes.
