A year after a devastating tragedy claimed the lives of her two children, Patience (not her real name) still can’t bring herself to speak about the ordeal. However, her neighbours vividly recall the fateful day. When one of her children fell critically ill, Patience and her husband braved the rain to reach the Goodwill Medical Centre (GMC), just a few kilometres away. The Avah River, which divides several communities in Enugu East Local Government Area, stood in their way.

Unable to afford a longer route by tricycle or vehicle, the family decided to wade through the treacherous river. Tragically, the child succumbed to cold and exhaustion upon arrival at the hospital. This heartbreaking incident was not an isolated case, according to Professor Uche Amazigo, founder of GMC and former World Health Organisation director.

Moved by similar stories, Amazigo embarked on a mission to construct a pedestrian- and tricycle-accessible bridge across the Avah River. With support from the TY Danjuma Foundation and others, the N38 million project was successfully completed. On April 8, 2025, the bridge was officially commissioned, bringing joy to the affected communities.

The bridge was described by Amazigo as “a symbol of hope, progress, and unity”. Enugu East Local Government Area chairman, Mr Beloved-Dan Anike, pledged additional infrastructure projects, including a mini-bridge and roads. GMC trustee, Prof. Anne Ndu, reflected on the tragic irony of having a well-equipped health centre nearby yet inaccessible, saying, “Imagine being ill, and nearby is a hospital with doctors and nurses, but you cannot get there fast enough.”

Ndu praised Amazigo’s dedication, stating, “Constructing this bridge was no easy task. But Prof. Amazigo, as always, drew on every resource possible—emptying her family savings, rallying public-spirited individuals—to make it happen. Her courage inspires us all.” Amazigo reaffirmed her mission, saying, “This bridge represents our collective commitment to human dignity. We are proud to work with the Enugu State Government to bring lasting change to the people.
